Preparing for the January Sales

SalesThe festivities of Christmas Day are yet to be over, but we’re already getting ads and emails about the January Sales adverts have begun.

The January sales inspire equal measures of excitement and dread in most people. It’s a fantastic time to stock up the wardrobe, bag a new sofa or replace that microwave you suspect is giving you radiation poisoning, but to get the most out of it, you’ll require military style preparation and planning…Your Saving Angels are here with some tips and tricks to make the whole thing that little bit easier and hopefully save a couple of quid in process.

Make a List – What It Is You Want To Buy?

The frantic and hectic nature of these sales means that it’s extremely easy to impulse buy and get carried away when looking at all the reductions and pick up something simply because it’s such a bargain.

If you plan out what it is you want from the sales and stick to a list, then you’ll be able to cover ground much quicker and hopefully spend less on clutter and grab what you really need.

Route Planner

If you’ve followed Step 1 then you’ll have a list of what you need. Second to that is to plan your route so you don’t waste time walking up and down the High Street. Additionally where possible try and hit the most popular stores early in the day before the crowds swell.

Equip Yourself

While some argue shopping is a sport, what can’t be denied is that hitting the high street is physically demanding. Equip yourself with comfortable shoes and attire – think to yourself if you’re going to a shopping centre if you really need your outdoor coat. Don’t forget to keep yourself hydrated as well; it can get very hot in these stores!

Don’t Forget you Consumer Rights

Remember that you can return goods purchased on sale if they are faulty – retailers cannot refuse this even if the product was purchased for a reduced cost. It’s best to keep your receipt, but remember any proof of purchase will suffice, such as a bank statement.

You will need to read the company returns policy regarding refunds and exchanges for goods that are the wrong size, or if you simply change your mind; as stores are under no obligation to refund or exchange if the product isn’t faulty.

Don’t forget the iStreet

Many High Street brands also extended their mammoth sales to their online stores if you don’t fancy battling it out in the cold. Additionally, you can also pick up discount codes and vouchers if you search around, such as free delivery.

On your marks, get set…wait!

Getting in first may blag you the choice of the bargains, but unless you have a specific thing in mind you want, you may be better off waiting. As the end of ‘sale season’ approaches at the end of January, many shops choose that moment to press the ‘final reductions’ button – so by waiting just a few weeks you can avoid the crowds and bag that bargain at maximum discount. Check out what stores use this tactic most often. M & S in particular often has an area set to one side with such reductions – particularly on clothes at amazing prices and it is not always made obvious – so be sure to keep an eye out!
